Malbec 2007 Wine

The grapes used for this wine come from a very small block on the farm standing in clay loam soil. Only 1.5 tons of grapes were picked in the early morning. After destemming the complete mash was pumped in the open fermentation tank and kept cold for 2 days. Whilst punching in this period we extracted maximum colour and flavour. The fermentation took 2 weeks and the wine was only punched by hand. After the fermentation the fresh Tannat went into small, 225 lt French oak barrels for ageing 14 months. June 2008 the wine was bottled and kept in the cellar for another one and half year. This maiden Malbec has a deep ruby colour, that shows a lot ageing of potential. The nose is rather complex with eucalyptus, mocha and fynbosch. The palate is as complex: full and soft, but with a spicy aftertaste. The wood gives a nice mouthfeel but is not prominent you still get the typical raspberry flavours of your grape, together with dark rich fruits like prunes. This wine is still young, but has a lot of ageing potential. Due to it's scarceness a rather unique wine. The Mooi Bly Malbec will be released on the first of January 2010. 4 stars in the John Platter 2011
